Ground Squirrel Spermophilus richarsonii Length: 30.0 cm or 11.8 inches Habitat/Range: Richardson's ground squirrels are found in the northern Great Plains of the United States. They range from western Minnesota west to Montana and from southern Canada to Colorado. Eating Habits: Richardson's hibernates so it builds up fat for enough energy to survive the winter. They eat green vegetation and some insects. These species will defend their territory to make sure that they have enough food. |

This animal looks like a small prairie dog. Most of its fur color is gray but it becomes more yellowish near the shoulders, face and sides. They have short tails and resemble another species called the Franklin's ground squirrel. |
