The purpose of the Saskatchewan Master Naturalist Program is to develop a network of reliable, highly-skilled "citizen scientists" to assist with local conservation projects, while at the same time providing learning opportunities to people interested in nature.

The program is open to everyone, and participants will learn about different facets of the natural world through a series of fun and interactive learning modules. Each learning module is designed with provincially-relevant content and delivered in a classroom and/or outdoor setting, with an emphasis on hands-on involvement.

Once all learning modules are completed, participants become certified as Saskatchewan Master Naturalists, and would be required to complete a minimum number of "volunteer development" hours in order to maintain their status.

The Saskatchewan Master Naturalists will be highly sought after by a number of provincial conservation organizations, as they will contribute to the success of many conservation efforts during and after their involvement in the program.

The Saskatchewan Master Naturalists will benefit not only by gaining a deeper knowledge and appreciation for nature, but will also have the chance to visit special places, be involved in exclusive projects, and give back to nature. In turn, Saskatchewan's precious landscapes will benefit from the many skilled volunteers working to ensure the success of conservation efforts around the province.

Does this sound like something you'd like to become involved in? If so, you can sign up for notifications by e-mailing info@npss.sk.ca or calling (306) 668-3940. This webpage will also be periodically updated with new information.

The Saskatchewan Master Naturalist program was launched during the NatureCity Festival in Saskatoon, from May 24-29, 2016. During this time, we debuted the following learning modules:

  • Citizen Science
  • Urban Ecosystems

We will continue to repeat learning modules to give everyone a chance to take them.

For 2017-18, we will develop and deliver 2 new learning modules - Prairie Ecosystems and Ecological Engagement. Both will be held earlier in 2018 and it will be advertised on our home page, on our social media feeds, and to everyone who has signed up for program notifications. We will also try to repeat the existing learning modules sometime later in 2018.

Other learning modules to follow include:

  • Forest Ecosystems
  • Aquatic Ecosystems

These modules will continue to be delivered in future years. Other, more focused continuing education opportunities will also be regularly scheduled.
